Mysterious Random Shoes
I feel like someone is out to get me. It's really driving me mad!!! They are playing with my mind and leaving me really perplexed and confused!!!
Ever since I first started driving, I would often see a random shoe (no, not a pair of shoes - just one shoe) left on the road or near the road. At first I was ok with it and even thought it was funny. Someone probably tried to run across the road when they were drunk and their shoe fell off but forgot to put it back on their feet. But I've been seeing more and more random shoes left almost strategically at various locations lately and I'm getting very confused. It's been averaging about one random shoe sighting per week.
It's not just with driving. I was catching the train home from a Real Estate Finance excursion today and as I looked out the window to look at Sydney Harbour, I saw a shoe placed on the edge of the Bridge railing. I swear, I could hear it laughing evilly at me. Last week, I was driving towards the e toll gate to the tunnel and saw one placed on the freeway. Why would there be a shoe in the middle of the freeway?!? There are seriously like 10 lanes!! It's not somewhere where you take a walk unless u want to get killed.
Why is it only ONE shoe?? Why are there shoes on the roads?? I don't get it!!! I just started this blog but I'll be sending my address out to people soon. So please tell me if you have been seeing random shoes around Sydney as well.

Basil, its normal to see one shoe in the roof gutter. But its not really normal to see it on the roads on differnet parts of Sydney. My friends who dont have blogs (and thus cant post comments) haven't seen shoes around either. They think this is like a X Files phenomenon. I think someone is trying to mess with my mind. I'm scared Basil!

YAY!!! Someone has been seeing them too! They are trying to mess with EVERYONES mind. Wing- I see heaps of dead possums around our area but i didn't report that because its kinda normal that there are dead possums on the road. just not dead shoes.

YOU ARE BRILLIANT WING! When i was getting some food downstairs, i was thinking - people probably put shoes on the wires just for fun. But when the possums run across the wires, they fall onto the road! And the ones that are put on the freeway and bridge are done on purpose to confuse us. Brilliant!

if i start seeing shoes everywhere i'm going to blame you.. i saw someone get a possum on my street and then get out of his car, stand in the middle of the street and throw it to the side of the street... pretty wrong..

Yeah get a possum = hit with car. There's heaps of possums running about on the road in Kuringai I wonder what he would have done if it was a cat or a dog?

You guys aren't taking this seriously! Some people have reported shoe sightings to me that they saw this week.
* Nat - Pacific Highway, Chatswood. blue dunlop shoe.
* Hazel - Elizabeth St, CBD. sandle.
* Wing - cnr archer st and boundary St, Chatswood
And there were some other shoe sightings but those people were just being silly i.e. people in my small business finance lecture who take off their shoe and then put it somewhere random, call out my name and then point to the shoe pretending to be scared.
There seems to be a trend here. The Random Shoe Bandit appears to be messing the minds of North Shore people. I shouldn't accuse anyone as maybe there is an explanation why people lose just one shoe. But why are the sightings so frequent?? I don't think its just the possum theory.

thats odd. i have seen any strange shoe sightings in melbourne..maybe its a geographical thing >.< j/k
its probably a psychological thing. Since the first time you drove and spotted a random shoe, you have given much thought about it and over time shoe sighting has become more and more of salient feature in your mind. I guess the more salient something becomes the more likely it will appear to be casual when in fact it is truely random!
next time you travel, make a deliberate effort to think of something else~

Haha Laura - good to hear from u! xoxox! Seriously, I didn't use to think too much about it until I started seeing them quite frequently. In Europe, I was on the road quite a bit but didn't see any.
More reported sightings by Susan Kong:
* Anzac Pde, outside Moore park
* Surry Hills
Comment by Susan: "the shoe was in the middle of the road... so weird"
My exact same thoughts Susan!!!

Hey Mel,
I am intrigued by your little dilemma, and a little frightened...
i mean, what happens to the other shoe? It has obviously lost a valueable partner- are they destined to be lonely forever (can you tell Im a romantic..)
Unfortunately I have as yet not come across poor lonely shoes, but I will keep an eye out. Perhaps there is some truth to the geographical link, I mean people in the Hawkesbury have no missing shoes to report (except for random pairs on the power lines) then again, we don't have possums either ( I think). Its quite perplexing, I will think a little about it ;)
Catch you later Mel
Helen!
PS Para got his movie, and he loves it- especially your random skit (perhaps you can share it with your audience, it was after all quite grand!)

hey mel! yea i do think that it's a bit strange and scary... BUUUUUTTTTT!!! i think i've got an explanation that will end your misery! hehe i dont know if you knew it was Art & About month this month... soooooooooooo.... the whole point of it is that "artwork" is displayed around sydney cuz they're actually using the city as a canvas!! strange but true.... do you rmbr last year they had a huge red ball squished in between the harbor bridge? and on another day i found it clamped under the MLC building entrance too! i thought i was going crazy and seeing things cuz ppl around me would be totally oblivious to this bright red thing while i kept turning my head backwards to check if it was still there! haha hmmm come to think of it... it looked like the red lotto ball in the ad rolling through the streets! hehe sooo i have a feeling they're doing the same thing again this year. i hope you can sleep in peace now! ;)

Haha yeah I knew already that the red ball thing was meant to be artistic because I read it in the newspaper. But for someone who didnt know, it would be a bit strange!
I don't think the shoes are put there for artistic purposes? The shoes are usually pretty dirty!
