Bits and Pieces

I haven't been writing as much as I used to. Life is pretty busy and it was only yesterday when I took a bath that I reflected on what I've been doing and what I want to do in the future (baths are a great time for reflection! Whilst listening to classical music). For the first time, I haven't felt like I want to go overseas and experience a different way of living there. I feel that I'm in the right place at this time in life right now and work, friends, church and everything is just right at the moment so there is no need to travel yet. But that's going according to plan (and yes I have finally got a plan... well one main hazy plan out of many). Below are bits and pieces of previous weeks that I have found memorable:

* Ending up on air with Merrick & Rosso with all of Sydney knowing what I was going to do on the long weekend and embarassingly losing the schooner vs midi tapping test because I couldn't here the taps over the phone

* Para and I checking out all the beautiful people at the races and Para saying unintentionally loudly that he thinks the person sitting next to him looks famous. The guy started laughing because of that comment and many other stupid ones we were saying and introduced himself to Para and turned out to be a member of Parliament.

* Ending up at an awesome apartment above a store in Paddington (opposite the Tsubi store) with some friends where there was a party with a whole soccer team and no girls except for me and Bec.

* Watching thousands of people pelting water balloons at each other at Coogee beach for the Xbox world record water balloon challenge

* Befriending someone who has $6000 worth of tattoos on his chest and back full of religious symbols and art. His back is one of Raphael's paintings! And him trying to introduce me to punk music... I'm gradually tolerating it

* Whilst having a bleeding nose last week, my sister suggested I put a tampon up my nose

Shoefiti

If you have ever read my first posts, you may remember the discussions about why we think there are random shoes on the road. It reached its peak in 2004 with a lot of people seeing single random shoes around not just Sydney, but around the world (well Para saw them in Denmark and Laura in India).
An article in the Sun Herald wrote about 'Shoefiti'. Shoefiti is when people tie their footwear together with the shoelaces and then throw it over powerlines. The reason behind it was actually a suggestion that Cher wrote about in 2004. Shoefiti marks the territory of drug dealers or gangs. But I'm still waiting for an explanation on why there are single random shoes on the road... it drive me nuts!!!

New Role

Tomorrow I'll be starting my new role as a Marketing Assistant for Dove. (I'm still at the same company but just changing roles). I'm pretty excited as I'll be working on the campaign for real beauty which I firmly believe in. 'Real Beauty' is beauty that comes in all shapes, sizes, colours, ages... flick through a magazine and you'll see that society's definition of beauty is a size 6, tall, Western woman (probably suffering from eating disorders and heavily airbrushed). I've always thought that people who have great personalities have beauty that really shines on the outside. And this campaign is trying to change society's definition of beauty.

I went to the Campaign for Real Beauty launch this week at The Establishment where there were a lot of magazine editors, TV people and C-grade celebrities (there were meant to be more reporters but apparently there was a shooting at Granville during the launch so all the reporters went there to report instead which I thought was strange). This was to start a debate on what 'beauty' is and to get a lot of PR for it. However, the people who were at the launch were fashionistas and a bit pretentious so I don' t know if the whole real beauty presentation would have really impacted them. Hopefully it will. However, Wendy Harmer spoke there and when I spoke to her afterwards, she seemed like a really strong believer of the campaign.

You will probably see advertising around Sydney soon of 5 women. They ask you to vote on the website on whether you think one is grey or gorgeous, another 44 and hot or 44 or not, or whether another woman is fat or fabulous. So go to http://www.campaignforrealbeauty.com.au/ to vote! I am glad I am working on this brand as it is a step closer to my earlier post about doing something in life that will help out society in some way. Dove has set up a self-esteem fund where some profits will go towards educating girls on a wider definition of beauty and helping girls with eating disorders. I'm not as brave as Ben but at least I'm going to be working on a campaign that may help people out.
